History
Modern Rug & Upholstery Cleaners was started in 1935 by Johnson and Scott at 810 Park Avenue in San Jose. The main business at the time was tent cleaning and repair for the U.S. Army. They later moved into designing one of the first truck-mounted steam-cleaning machines, producing equipment for the modern rug cleaner. Area-rug cleaning started slowly and then grew to become the mainstay of the business. In 1970, James and Rumored Smith purchased Modern Rug. They had their own carpet cleaning company called Pioneer Rug Cleaners. They became Modern-Pioneer Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners. The business grew to the point that they had to move to a larger building on property they owned in Campbell. They built the new rug and upholstery cleaning plant. (They really did build most of the building.)
In 1988, they founded a new location, but retained the same great quality of work at 3255 South Winchester Boulevard. In 2006, Bruce M. Savin purchased Modern-Pioneer Carpet & Upholstery. Bruce owned Save-A-Rug, a successful carpet cleaning company that had been doing business with Modern-Pioneer Carpet & Upholstery for 15 years. Bruce and his crew have continued the quality work and superb customer service for which Modern Rug & Upholstery Cleaners has always been known.
